Spam Filtering For Your Website Email Accounts

Before you enable spam filtering for email ending with @yourwebaddress.com please read the different options available below.

Tag and Deliver Spam

Email which the spam filter identifies as spam will have
**SPAM** added to the beginning of the subject line. The tagged email is then delivered along with your legitimate email when your software downloads new messages.

Some people use this method in conjunction with mail filtering rules in their email software (ex. Outlook Express) to direct any incoming email with **SPAM** in the subject directly to their Deleted Items folder, or a special Spam folder they create.  Click here for "Tag and Deliver" setup instructions.

PROS CONS
  • Safest method if you are worried about legitimate mail being identified as Spam.

  • Fastest access to view messages the filter identified as Spam - they are downloaded to your computer and you do not have to login to webmail.

  • You do not have to remember to login to your email account online to view and delete Spam messages.

  • You can use this type of filtering as a test to make sure the filter is not identifying legitimate email as spam.  Then you may want to consider another filter setting.

  • If you do not have a high-speed connection to the Internet you may be annoyed by the amount of time it takes to download all of your email that includes many Spam messages.

Quarantine Spam

Email which the spam filter classifies as spam will be placed in the "Junk" folder on the mail server.  These messages are not downloaded to your email software when you check for new mail.

To view these messages you must login to your email address web-based at http://webmail.cvtv.net and click on the folder named Junk.

NOTE: You must remember to login to webmail periodically to delete the messages stored the Junk folder as they count against your allotted amount of email storage space.  Click here for "Quarantine Spam" setup instructions When your mailbox is full people will receive error attempting to send you email stating "mailbox full".

PROS CONS
  • You do not have to wait for email identified as Spam to downloaded to your email software. This is a plus for folks who do not have a high-speed internet connection and are still using dial-up access.
  • You must remember to delete quarantined Spam messages as it goes against your allotted amount of web storage space. When your mailbox is full people will receive error attempting to send you email stating "mailbox full".

  • You must login periodically to verify that no legitimate email was accidentally recognized as Spam.

Delete Spam

When this option is enabled anything the filter identifies as spam is permanently deleted.

Some people use this method in conjunction with Always Allow and Always Block lists they create to only accept mail from addresses they wish to communicate with.

Click here for "Delete Spam" setup instructions.

PROS CONS
  • You will never see email identified as spam

  • You do not have to wait while your email software downloads both legitimate email and Spam

  • There is always a risk that the spam filter may identify  legitimate email as spam and delete it.  If this happens there is no way to track "missing email".
